Fun ways to improve your writing
How to Improve your Writing
Writing is an important part of any Language and many people find it the most difficult. There are so many different ways that you can practice and improve your writing, below are just a few tips.
1. Postcards
While you are studying in London away from home, write postcards to your friends and family! It is a fun way to update them on what is happening with your studies and life in London. You will need to keep your sentences concise as there is not much space on a postcard!
2. Recipes
Do you love cooking? Or do you love eating and trying new dishes? Why don’t you write and share your favourite recipes with your classmates and your teacher? This is a great way of learning and practising new vocabulary relating to food and cooking.
3. Invitations
Are you having a party to celebrate something? Or do you want to get together with your friends? Why don’t you write an invitation instead of texting or messaging them? This way you will be practicing your writing skills through giving direct information. Don’t forget details like the time, place, date and what they need to bring!
4. Social network update
Social media is a great way to practice your writing! Every time you post on Facebook do you write in full sentences using articles and adjectives? Before you post it check that your grammar and spelling are correct! When you are ‘tweeting’ practice keeping your sentences short and concise as you can only use 140 characters!
5. Blog/Diary
Why don’t you start writing a blog about all your London adventures? You could make it public or just keep it for friends, family or yourself to see. This is a fun way to keep people updated on what you are doing. It is nice to go back and read what you have written and you will be able to see how much your writing has improved.
Make sure you write something every day, remember ‘practice makes perfect’. Also get your teachers to check your writing, this way you can see your mistakes and learn how to fix them. Ultimately, as you improve your writing skills, you can try to write about different topics. As a result, this will increase your vocabulary and knowledge.
6. Practice!
To get you started to look at the list of topics below then choose one on them and start writing!
- Describe your first week at Rose of York and living in London
- Would you prefer to live in the city or the countryside? Why?
- What is special about food in your country? How is it different from food in London?
- Men and women are equal in all ways? Do you agree with this statement? Why/why not?
- What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?
