Living in London – An International Team
Living in London is wonderfully multicultural and constantly offering new opportunities. So, with Valentine’s day just around the corner, we wanted to share the love and introduce you to our wonderful Student Services and Operations Officer – Sofia. Sitting at the front desk, she is on the front line and constantly busy but she wouldn’t want it any other way! Lets see what she has to say…
Please introduce yourself…
My name is Sofia, I am from Russia and I’m 33. I’ve been in London for almost 7 years with a little break in Russia for 8 months.
Why did you choose to come to London?
Initially, I came here for 6 months and my goal was to improve my English language just because I was teaching English in Russia as a EFL teacher. After 6 months, I decided it was not enough, and really, it wasn’t enough (it’s never enough!). so, I extended for another year and then I realised I’ve been here too long, and if I’m studying, why don’t I study a master’s degree or something. I did my masters here and then yes, I stayed here after I graduated and I’ve never left!
What keeps you in London?
My husband keeps me here. Haha, speaking of London, specifically, what I love is the international environment which I don’t think I will find in any other place on earth. And that is absolutely what attracts me to London the most.
As well, my way of looking at the world has changed (I believe this is a positive change). And, this is as a result of living in London and experiencing everything that it has to offer.
What do you like about Rose of York?
So, I have worked at Rose of York for 8 months and mainly, I love it here because of the people I work with. Some of my previous positions didn’t offer the same quality of colleagues in my view. I continue working here because of the team. I mean, our teachers are qualified, and they are really good. Not only as teachers but also as people and they are really interesting to talk to.
Having taught English in Russia, I am passionate about the English language and I love being able to help students improve. I am passionate about international students because I was once exactly where they are now. I remember the days when I struggled to express myself and communicate with people from around the world. The fact that I can now help them in their journey here at Rose of York really makes me happy!
What does your average day entail?
My job title is Student Services and Operations Officer. So, my main job is to work directly with students and make sure that they are happy being here at Rose of York. I do everything here with the goal to make our students happy.
So first of all, I do everything so that classes run smoothly. This includes preparing registers so that the teachers know exactly who will be in their classes. And of course, to communicate with students who are here at the moment and make sure that they are happy. We aim to offer great services and we work hard to maintain our standards.
Monitoring attendance is another large part of my job whilst students are enrolled at Rose of York. When a student leaves us, they get a certificate. But they only get that if their attendance is over 80%. I don’t like when I am not able to give out a certificate, so I keep an eye on everyone. However, and more importantly, attendance is also connected to the welfare of our lovely students. If they are absent for more than 2 days in a row, I get worried about them and I want to make sure they are OK.
