Getting Around London
London is a very large city, however, it does have a great Transport Network so you will find it quite easy to getting around London. There are many different transport options you can take, some are cheaper than others and some are free!!
Below is some useful vocabulary and information that will make travelling around London easier for you.
Oyster Card
This is a very useful thing to have while you are in London. Instead of buying a paper ticket every time you travel you can buy an oyster card. You can buy an Oyster card for£5 and you can load money onto it. Every time you scan on and off a bus or train your oyster card will be charged. To save a bit of money you can buy a weekly, monthly or yearly pass on your oyster card. Depending on how many zones you travel everyday this will be cheaper for you.
Zones
London is split into 6 travel Zones. Zone one is Central London and zone six is the furthest away. If you travel by Tube, London Overground, DLR or National Rail, the further out you travel the more expensive it will get. However, if you travel by bus it doesn’t matter what zone you travel to, it is the same price.
Tube
The tube is the underground rail system. It is one of the most popular forms of public transport in London because the trains are regular and travel very quickly. It can be a little confusing at first but once you get used to it, it is a great way of getting around.
Boris bikes
You can hire these bikes for £2 by going to one of the many docking stations around London. This is a cheap, fun and easy way to get around London!
Student discount
If you are a student that studies full time at Rose of York for at least 14 weeks you are also able to get a student discount of 30%.
One final tip
There is a fantastic APP available called ‘City mapper’. Once you have downloaded the free app, you can type in your destination and it will calculate all of your travel options for you. And the best thing: it has a map included!
