Eight Alternative Angles of London Life
Eight Alternative Angles of London Life
Moving to a new city is always exciting and London Life if no different. After your English Language lessons, you can visit all the tourist attractions around London and, no doubt, you will never run out of things to do! However, when you feel like doing something a little different, try out the following activities and see an alternative side of London Life.
Angel Canal Festival
This one-day festival is along the canal in Angel. You can explore the water ways while experiencing many attractions such as boat trips, art projects including free Pottery sessions. There is also a Regatta with free ‘canoeing’. Arsenal will also hold a ‘Penalty Shoot Out’ with prizes including a £100 cheque or an Arsenal signed T-shirt or Football. There are 70 stalls selling crafts, books, clothes, jewellery, a wide range of hot and cold food and non-alcoholic drinks. Many local and national charities have stalls to raise awareness, and there are two pubs ‘The Narrowboat’ and ‘The Plaquemine Lock.’
Dalston Roof Park
Among Hackney’s Victorian buildings and overlooking London’s skyscrapers, Dalston’s only rooftop venue is an opportunity to relax, eat, drink, dance and see the London landscape differently. This rooftop transforms what was once a forgotten space into a garden music venue, including flowers, palm trees and a Martin Audio Soundsystem! Newly refurbished for 2017, DRP has two bars, in house catering, a state of the art retractable roofing system (to protect against bad weather) and so much more!
Curve Garden
This relaxing garden setting is perfect for escaping city life. Here, residents (and those willing to travel) can settle down for a sip of juice or coffee from the café on one of the benches amongst the cool plants and produce growing. Fresh produce comes straight from the garden, all the vegetable beds are maintained by locals. The garden also plays host to gardening, craft and children’s workshops. There are many events happening in that all occur at various seasons throughout the year. This garden is also open all year and every day.
Live Dance at Sadlers wells
Sadler’s Wells is the world’s No.1 venue dedicated to bringing the very best international and UK dance to London audiences. They present dance in all forms from contemporary to circus, ballet to bollywood, tap to tango, flamenco to family shows, and much more.
Free live music at Shacklewell Arms
The Shacklewell Arms is a pub and live music venue in Dalston, a short walk from Dalston Kingsland Overground Station. It has three different spaces: a classic and cosy British pub, a covered and heated courtyard with a smoking area, and a back room with a stage and dance floor for live music events. Many events here are free and there is a vintage Brazilian-kiosk with the overall dècor matching the young, trendy and local guests. Live music acts are hosted throughout the week while DJ nights are organised at the weekends. Music can vary from acoustic, rock, alternative to house, electronica and experimental: while the music changes, the quality stays high.
Making and drinking beer at Beaver Town
This is a place where beer is made and called a ‘brewery’. They produce fine beers with a passion for innovation and quality. Beaver Town like to keep things simple; big flavours and character and balance in each beer produced. Drinkers can also enjoy an experience involving unique artwork that is so important to the creative philosophy. Beaver Town beer is an evolution of both old recipes and old principles and we believe the artwork should reflect this.
Broadway Market
This has been home to market traders since the 1890s, and provides a unique mix of tastes and cultures. Here you will find independent shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes and of course stalls offering amazing fresh produce, authentic street food, the most original clothing, arts and crafts in London. All crammed into a little East End street between the Regent’s Canal and London Fields.
The market is open 9am– 5pm every Saturday, with shops, bars and restaurants open throughout the week.
Secret cinema
This is a “live cinema” experience, combining film screenings with interactive performances in built surroundings. Secret Cinema Presents: large-scale events showcasing popular films at an undisclosed location.
- Secret Cinema Tell No One: screening past and present auteur cinema. The film title and location are undisclosed prior to each event.
- Secret Cinema-X Presents: smaller-scale, intimate productions of Secret Cinema Presents.
