Finding the time and patience to improve your reading skills is difficult. Unfortunately, many of us do not have the time to dedicate to reading and writing.
Fun ways to improve your reading
- When learning a new language, many students find it useful to read all shops signs out loud. When you are walking down the street, it might feel a bit strange at first but after a while you don’t notice you’re doing it. By reading signs out loud, you are improving your reading skills as you start to recognise words quicker. Additionally, by reading the signs out loud, you improve your speaking and fluency skills.
- Start a book club with your friends. This is a great opportunity to not only practice reading but also your conversation. Choose a book and give yourself 2-4 weeks to finish the book depending on the difficulty.
- Remember that we have a library where you can borrow books. We have organised the books into different levels and it is important that you read to your level, so not too difficult or too easy.
- If you are reading a book, make sure it is the correct level for you. If you find the book is too easy, you might get bored. However, if you think it is too difficult, you might not feel like continuing.
- Similarly, when you are reading a book, you should read something that you are interested it. When you are interested in the topic, you are more likely to remember the vocabulary and more like to talk about the book with friends.
- Change the language on your smartphone or computer this way you are always reading in English.
Fun ways to improve your writing
- Write a diary every day and get your teacher to check it. Start by writing a few sentences every few days then increase the amount you write and start writing everyday
There are many different ways we can improve our reading skills. We do not have to force ourselves to read one page of a book everyday. We can make reading fun!
