Trinity Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE)
What are GESE Exams?
GESE exams are one-to-one, face-to-face assessments of English language speaking and listening skills with a Trinity examiner, who encourages the candidate to show what they can do through prompts and authentic interactive dialogue. The exam length is 5-25 minutes depending on the grade.
GESE exams are available at 12 levels:
Grouped by development stage, GESE exams offer a progressive framework for the development of English language skills and an assessment for every learner.

Sample 2-week syllabus
The following sample syllabus is designed for those students with a good command of the English language (Trinity intermediate stage), who want to brush up on their English language skills and learn the relevant exam skills in a short time before taking their required GESE.
The course can be extended to a greater number of weeks to meet the student’s needs and to acquire all the necessary language skills to reach the chosen GESE grade.
Week 1
- Day 1 – Exam introduction and familiarisation – student self-evaluation
- Day 2 – Speaking and language development (topic task)
- Day 3 – Listening (learning to understand and interact)
- Day 4 – Speaking and topic development
- Day 5 – Listening (independent listening)
Week 2
- Day 1 – Speaking (interactive task)
