WHEN CAN I START THE COURSE?
Our courses run all year* and you can join at any time. You can start your course on any Monday and you can enrol on any course for as long as you like. The minimum amount of time you can book is 1 week.
*The school closes for two weeks at Christmas, and on Bank Holidays.
Please Contact us for more details.
HOW DO I BOOK A COURSE?
You can enrol online, by email or at the school.
You can always come directly to the school if you are already in London and talk to our staff in Reception. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
HOW MANY DIFFERENT LEVELS ARE THERE?
We teach students from elementary level through to Advance.
Please look at the Your Level of English page for more details.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON MY FIRST DAY?
You will do a placement test at 09:00 to assess your level (this includes a speaking test). This is done so that we are certain you will be studying in the right class.
After your placement test, you will have a short welcome meeting and induction to the school. Then, you will have a meeting with the Director of Studies to discuss your learning needs. Finally, you will join your class after the morning break.
WILL I HAVE THE SAME TEACHER FOR THE WHOLE COURSE?
Teachers usually change every term, that is, every 10 weeks. We think it helps students if they can hear a variety of accents and experience different teaching styles.
CAN I TAKE HOLIDAYS?
Please ask in Reception for more information.
WHO CAN I TALK TO?
If you have any problem, or simply want someone to talk to, there are many people available to you.
We have designated welfare staff at the school. Alternatively, you can talk to any member of staff, including your teacher, if you are missing home or if you have any problems or questions. Please feel free to approach any or all of these people. If you are staying in homestay, our homestay hosts are always available.
We are always happy to help and want to ensure that you have a safe and happy time at Rose of York.
WHAT CAN I DO IF I WANT TO MAKE A COMPLAINT?
We have complaints forms for Academic or Non-Academic complaints which you can fill in – just ask at Reception.
You can discuss the problem with your teacher, the Welfare Officer, the Designated Safeguarding Lead or the Director of Studies.
I WANT TO GO TO UNIVERSITY IN THE UK – IS IT POSSIBLE?
Yes. You need to take the IELTS exam, and depending on the course and university you choose, you will need to achieve an IELTS score between 6.0 and 9.0.
Alternatively, passing the Cambridge Advanced Examination (the CAE) with a grade of A, B or C may be enough.
For more information, you can visit our Exam Preparation page.
HOW CAN I FIND SOMEWHERE TO LIVE?
We have two very popular options with regards to our accommodation.
We can organise homestay accommodation where you live in a family home in London and you are considered as part of the family. The other option would be living in a student residence, which offers you more independence and the ‘student experience.’
There are also many websites where you can find a flat or house to rent alone or you could share with other people. For more information, have a look at our accommodation options.
Please email us if you have any questions or if you need more information.
IS LONDON SAFE?
In general, London is one of the safest cities in the world, but you should always be aware of what’s happening around you.
Therefore, we recommend that you do not carry large amounts of cash with you (maximum £50 at any time). Similarly, always keep your belongings next to you, close your bags and hold on to them when you’re in any public places. It is advisable to always tell somebody where you are going and have your mobile phone with you at all times.
Stay in groups or travel with friends whenever possible, and plan your journey. You can visit the Transport for London website for more information.
WHAT SAFETY PROCEDURES ARE IN PLACE FOR UNDER 18S?
As stated in our Safeguarding policy (Handbooks and Policies), the school has strict guidelines for all staff, students and accommodation hosts to follow.
We carefully monitor the attendance of all students and in particular Young Learners to ensure their safety. If you are absent from class, we will contact you to make sure you are safe, and if we don’t hear from you you we will follow our Missing Students’ policy.
WHAT EXTRA INFORMATION DO I NEED IF I AM UNDER 18 YEARS OLD?
If you are a student who is under 18 there are special measures that we need to take. This is due to our Welfare requirements and in order to ensure your safety and enjoyment during your time at Rose of York.
Please follow the link to our Handbooks and Policies.
Your parents will need to complete several documents before you depart for London. If you have any further questions, our Student Services department would be more than happy to help.
STUDENT CARDS AND DISCOUNTS
Are there any other discounts or student cards?
Upon request, we can issue a student card for you that can be used in various High Street stores, cafes and touristic attractions. Ask at reception for more information.
